The Society and our community planning table, The Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness, distributes free items including clothing, shoes and socks to people who are homeless through the Outreach Resource Centre (ORC).  Totally volunteer operated, the average of 120 people who attend the ORC rely on the Society and Task Force to meet their essential needs.

Burnaby Task Force - March 2018

Society President Karen O’Shannacery receiving 481 pairs of new socks from Your City Sports President Carolyn Colwell, March 6, 2018 for distribution to Burnaby’s homeless.

The homeless spend an inordinate amount of time standing and walking, significantly more that the rest of the general population.  This leads to a variety of foot conditions, both infectious and non-infectious, frequently caused by wet footwear, and not uncommonly, ill-fitting shoes.  These conditions include ulcers, corns, fungus, ingrown toenails, etc.  What is critical to preventing “street feet” is dry clean socks and shoes. Hence socks are essential for good foot health, are in truly high demand, and we can never have enough of them to distribute freely to those living in extreme poverty like the homeless who rely on us.

We would like to recognize Your City Sports and Carolyn Colwell, President, for creating a unique program in which for every sock purchased, another is given to homeless serving agencies such as our own!  A huge shout out to Your City Sports and local supporters: Volleyball BC (200 pairs), Burnaby South Secondary School (175 pairs) and Burnaby Devils Lacrosse (106 pairs including 46 pairs for team prizes) who collectively donated 481 pairs of new socks to the local homeless!
