City activates warming centre for month of January

Burnaby, BC – The City of Burnaby has activated an overnight warming centre at the Bonsor Recreation Complex, providing extra capacity for vulnerable people to take shelter from winter weather.
It will operate 8:30 pm to 8:00 am daily until February 1, and will be open to the public for those in need.
Bonsor Recreation Complex is located at 6550 Bonsor Avenue in the Metrotown neighbourhood and was chosen for this service because it is centrally located, close to transit and other amenities.
This warming centre will complement existing homeless services available in Burnaby, which include:
- Douglas Shelter—2294 Douglas Road
- Emergency Response Centre—3680 Sperling Avenue
- Extreme weather shelters—Southside Community Church, 7135 Walker Avenue (Open the 1st to the 15th of the month), and Westminster Bible Chapel, 7540 6th Street (Open 16th to end of the month).
By activating this facility, the City is following through on the recommendations included in HOME: Burnaby’s Housing and Homelessness Strategy. The strategy, approved by council on December 6, 2021, includes a series of recommendations for preventing pathways into homelessness, supporting pathways out of homelessness, and supporting homeless-serving partners in Burnaby.
