Open October to March, it provided overnight respite for 66 nights when the weather put homeless people at high health risk. The EWR provided 549 bed nights (475 men and 74 women) of shelter with food, necessities and support. Burnaby’s EWR shelter is operated by Lookout Society, with food being provided by Westminster Bible Chapel amazing team of volunteers. EWR is funded by donations and BC Housing, supported by the Task Force and is a coordinated community response. The EWR sheltering site primary location is Westminster Bible Chapel and the back up location is Burnaby Alliance Church. We would like to send a huge shout out of gratefulness and appreciation to these two churches for hosting, at no charge, Burnaby’s EWR; without them we would not be able to provide this essential safety line. Special thanks to Marianne Buesink (WBC & food!), co-leads Fatima Sunderji (Lookout) & Norman Oldham (Task Force) and Norm DeVos (storage). Thanks too to the rest of the EWR work group that provides the leadership and coordination: Kathy Baugh (WBC), Carla Schuk (City), Daisy Stapleton (BC Housing), Karen O’Shannacery (Task Force).
