The government listened to our calls, introduced amendments to the National Housing Strategy Act and it has now passed the House of Commons – next stop, the Senate! The right to housing commitment in the
National Housing Strategy Act makes a strong and clear federal
commitment to housing as a fundamental human right and adds an
innovative new rights-based accountability model that gives a
meaningful voice and role to people with experience of homelessness and housing need.
CALL TO ACTION!
Once the bill passes the Senate, it is off for Royal Assent.  It’s still critical to have a strong show of support for the right to housing. While we
have every reason to believe the budget bill will pass, we are facing a
federal election this fall and it is urgently important that federal
politicians and parties see strong public support for housing, ending
homelessness and housing rights so that our important gains are not lost.
